One of the standout examples is the Carhartt Force™ Winnipeg Jacket. Its lightweight nylon shell combines a durable water-repellent treatment with Wind Fighter™, Rugged Flex™ and Carhartt Force™ FastDry™ technology. Stretch panels through the sides and underarms help with movement, while insulation and a drop-tail hem add protection when conditions change.

For wetter weather, the Monterey Jacket takes a different approach. Carhartt uses a waterproof breathable laminated membrane through its Storm Defender™ technology alongside Wind Fighter™, fully sealed construction and water-repellent zips. Rugged Flex™ is designed to add stretch and freedom of movement without giving up the durability expected from workwear. Carhartt states that Rugged Flex garments have to meet its standards for stretch, recovery and durability, and the technology appears across trousers, jackets, shirts and footwear.

Carhartt Force™ and FastDry™ are focused on moisture management. Force fabrics are engineered to fight sweat and dry quickly, making them particularly useful for physically demanding jobs or anyone moving between changing temperatures during the working day.

Rain Defender™ is Carhartt's durable water-repellent treatment. Rather than making a garment fully waterproof, it helps light rain bead up and roll away from the fabric.

It uses a 203gsm stretch ripstop fabric made from 95% nylon and 5% elastane, alongside Rugged Flex™ and Force™ FastDry™ technology. Reinforced pockets, large cargo storage, a Comfortflex waistband, and triple-stitched main seams make it a practical option for long working days without feeling like an old-fashioned heavyweight work trouser.

Elsewhere in Carhartt's work trouser range, you'll find Cordura® reinforced kick panels and pockets, articulated knees, double-front construction and stretch ripstop fabrics. These reinforcement points matter because they're placed where work trousers commonly take the most punishment.

Why is Carhartt duck fabric so well known?

You can't talk about Carhartt workwear without talking about duck.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the animal. Duck is a tightly woven fabric that has become closely associated with traditional American workwear, and Carhartt has been using versions of cotton duck for well over a century.

Carhartt's classic fabric range includes Duck, Firm Duck, Washed Duck and Rugged Flex Duck. Its signature duck is a heavyweight ring-spun cotton construction, while Rugged Flex Duck introduces stretch to improve mobility.

The tight weave helps the material resist snags and gives it natural resistance to water penetration, although untreated duck fabric shouldn't be confused with a fully waterproof material. Carhartt also uses softer or stretch versions where greater comfort and movement are needed.

Duck isn't the only hard-working material in the Carhartt range.
